Audit — VR Intervention Provenance (v0.3.6)
Audit — VR Intervention Provenance (v0.3.6)
Audit question
What Fanti-linked virtual-reality intervention or interventions underlie the 2026 keynote claims that VR-based mindfulness and executive-function training enhances empathy and reduces anger, aggression, hostility, anxiety and depression?
Frozen keynote claims
- EFCAP 2026: VR interventions incorporating mindfulness and executive functioning training "show promise" in enhancing empathy and reducing anger, aggression and hostility.
- EAPL 2026: VR-based mindfulness and executive-functioning training enhances empathy and reduces hostility, aggression, anxiety and depression symptoms.
Provenance findings
1. Fanti has a real VR research trajectory, but the older work is measurement/elicitation, not treatment
Fanti coauthored VR fear-reactivity work with Nicholas Thomson and collaborators. These studies used immersive VR to elicit fear/threat responses and measure psychophysiology in relation to psychopathic/CU traits. They do not test mindfulness or executive-function training as therapy and cannot support the 2026 efficacy claims.
2. The University of Cyprus VR infrastructure is new and confirms capability, not efficacy
The University of Cyprus Faculty of Social Sciences and Education opened a 40-workstation multimodal VR laboratory in 2026. Fanti is listed among the academics responsible for the initiative. The lab integrates VR, BIOPAC physiology, fNIRS and full-body tracking. This materially expands Fanti's intervention capability but does not itself establish treatment effects.
3. Fanti's official 2026 biography explicitly places VR interventions in his current program
The EFCAP keynote biography states that his current program applies neuro-biological, virtual-reality, school and multi-systemic interventions for adolescents at risk for behavioral problems. EAPL similarly describes development and evaluation of virtual-reality interventions. This establishes programmatic ownership/participation, but the publicly located sources do not identify the exact DPL VR protocol producing the composite keynote outcomes.
4. Fanti is publicly listed as a Research Scientist at Arche XR
Arche XR lists Fanti as a Research Scientist. Arche XR is led by Nicholas Thomson, a longstanding Fanti collaborator in psychophysiology, aggression and VR research. This is a meaningful translational-network connection.
5. Arche XR has peer-reviewed VR intervention evidence that overlaps parts of the keynote outcome space
Impact VR, developed by Arche XR/VCU investigators, has randomized controlled trial evidence in youth with conduct disorder. Peer-reviewed studies report:
- lower CU traits at follow-up;
- lower caregiver-rated conduct problems;
- reduced reactive aggression, sustained to 3 months;
- no significant difference in proactive aggression;
- improved emotion-recognition accuracy;
- improved peer and parent relationships;
- reduced social stress.
However, Fanti is not an author on the located Impact VR efficacy papers, and the papers do not describe the intervention as a combined mindfulness + executive-function training protocol. Therefore Impact VR is coded as adjacent ecosystem evidence, not as direct evidence for EFCAP-02/EAPL-02.
6. Arche XR also markets distinct VR programs that explicitly use mindfulness and executive-function concepts
Current Arche XR materials describe:
- Elevate VR: violence prevention, mindfulness, empathy, emotional regulation, conflict resolution and biofeedback;
- Resilience VR: anxiety/stress, mindfulness/meditation, CBT/DBT coping strategies;
- Focus VR: working memory, cognitive flexibility, impulse control and decision-making;
- Lumen VR: mindfulness training.
These program descriptions explain how the keynote phrase "mindfulness and executive-functioning training within virtual reality" could map onto a broader intervention portfolio. But current product pages are not efficacy evidence, and no located source establishes that Fanti personally designed, tested, or authored outcome reports for these specific programs.
Key provenance conclusion
The public record supports a three-layer VR genealogy:
- Fanti-linked VR measurement science — verified, peer reviewed, not intervention efficacy.
- Fanti-linked VR infrastructure/translational network — verified, including University of Cyprus VR Lab and Arche XR research-scientist role.
- VR intervention efficacy claims in the 2026 keynotes — exact Fanti/DPL protocol provenance remains unresolved.
The peer-reviewed Impact VR studies are important contextual evidence because they arise from the Arche XR/Thomson collaboration ecosystem and overlap with conduct disorder, CU traits and aggression. They cannot, however, be substituted for a Fanti-authored DPL mindfulness/executive-function VR trial without an explicit provenance link.
Endpoint status after provenance audit
| Endpoint | Fanti-specific source status | Adjacent ecosystem evidence | Audit status |
|---|---|---|---|
| empathy | exact Fanti VR treatment source not located | Arche XR product materials emphasize empathy/prosocial skill building; Impact VR measures related socioemotional constructs but not a direct empathy endpoint in located RCT abstracts | unresolved |
| anger | exact Fanti source not located | broader VR anger literature exists; no direct Fanti/Impact VR anger endpoint located | unresolved |
| aggression | exact Fanti source not located | Impact VR RCT: reactive aggression decreased; proactive aggression did not differ | adjacent-support only |
| hostility | exact Fanti source not located | no direct Impact VR hostility endpoint located | unresolved |
| anxiety | exact Fanti source not located | Resilience VR targets anxiety/stress but located materials are program descriptions/current evaluation | unresolved |
| depression | exact Fanti source not located | Resilience/Rise VR target depressive symptoms/self-worth; direct Fanti-linked efficacy source not located | unresolved |
| CU traits | not part of keynote VR sentence, but relevant | Impact VR RCT reports lower youth/caregiver CU traits | adjacent-support only |
| conduct problems | not named in keynote VR sentence | Impact VR RCT reports lower caregiver-rated conduct problems | adjacent-support only |
| emotion recognition | not the keynote's principal VR outcome | Impact VR RCT reports significant improvement | adjacent-support only |
Interpretation rule
Do not convert Fanti's role at Arche XR into authorship or evidentiary ownership of Arche XR trials. Code the relationship as a translational-network link unless a paper, grant, protocol, disclosure or project source explicitly identifies his role in the intervention's design, analysis or trial.
Freeze decision
Until a results-bearing Fanti/DPL VR paper, thesis, trial record, conference abstract, protocol or explicit Arche XR contribution record is identified, code EFCAP-02/EAPL-02 as:
programmatically-supported / exact-efficacy-provenance-unresolved
Do not label the composite empathy/anger/aggression/hostility/anxiety/depression claim as peer-reviewed Fanti-lab efficacy evidence.
