Bridge chronology
2015–2017 — Physiological differentiation
Fear, startle, facial response, and autonomic measures are used to test whether subgroups differ below the behavioral phenotype.
2018–2019 — Synthesis and constraint
Cross-age neurophysiology plus review/meta-analysis support heterogeneity while weakening simple single-biomarker accounts.
2020–2021 — Neural and attentional branching
Amygdala, gaze, prefrontal activity, and cTBS test increasingly specific mechanisms. Results are subtype-, task-, and measure-dependent.
2021–2023 — Developmental extension and transactional reintegration
Child studies extend psychophysiological differentiation, while longitudinal work reconnects physiological sensitivity with parenting and later behavior.
2022–2024 — Manipulability and mechanism-targeted intervention
Emotion recognition, gaze, mimicry, and parent-child emotional engagement become explicit targets of manipulation. Construct operationalization remains consequential.
Provisional convergence
Subtyping + psychophysiology + neurocognition + emotion processing → candidate mechanisms become measurable → selected mechanisms become experimentally manipulable → intervention programs increasingly target them
What the current corpus supports
- meaningful heterogeneity in conduct-problem/CU-related phenotypes;
- multi-system candidate mechanisms rather than one universal marker;
- partial causal manipulability of selected proximal processes;
- early mechanism-targeted intervention.
What it does not yet establish
- one biological signature of antisocial behavior;
- prospective treatment matching from biomarker profile;
- durable technology-driven reduction of serious antisocial behavior across populations;
- forensic effectiveness or recidivism reduction.
